Windows Live Onecare "cannot finish installation" RRS feed

  • Question

  •

    Sir,

I bought the Windows liveOnecare from Cosco and am trying to install it on my only one system Dell Inspirod 5150 with XP.

I tried four days twice each but all the time after installing and uninstalling and installilng again, which takes more than 3 hours each on my system as it is a dialup system with PeoplePC Online, it keeps telling me that

    "Urgent

One care needs to connect to the Intenet to finsh installation. Check this PC's connection and check again".

However I try this message keeps coming and now I can neither install and use my  One care, nore do I have my previous AVG and McFee antivirus to keep using my iternet as they have been removed to install Onecare. So  I am frustrated as there is no phone number to get help with Tech support to install my Onecare. please help  me before my system collapses.

  • I have a similar problem this.

On completion of the 90 day trial period, I attempted to subscribe, but was informed by Microsoft Help that One Care was not available in South Africa and activation was blocked.  I was advised by the helper to purchase One Care from e.g. E-bay and install from CD.  I have now purchased a NIB Microsoft Authentic CD from a vendor who ships to SA (Postage costs more than the package).

I have attempted to activate the installation and was instructed to uninstall the existing One Care (trial version). I have since uninstalled and reinstalled One Care from CD several times and always end up being advised that there is no windows live ID associated with a subscription - on continuing further  keep on returning to the "Get Windows Live" trial offer.

I have followed dozens of routes through One Care Help and am getting nowhere.  At no time do I arrive at a screen asking for the product key.

I have downloaded and installed the above fix three times and have no success - I keep on ending up being advised that my Windows Live ID is not associated with a subscription and on continuing end up at the trial offer again.

I have wasted days on this problem.

  • Gordon, you do *not* have the same problem. Whoever informed you that using a retail CD would work was wrong. You are physically located in a country where you are prevented from activating since OneCare is not *legally* sold there.

In which countries and languages is Windows Live OneCare available?

The Windows Live OneCare subscription service is available in the following countries and languages: Australia (English), Austria (German), Belgium (Dutch, French), Canada (English, French), France (French), Germany (German), Ireland (English), Italy (Italian), Japan (Japanese), Mexico (Spanish), Netherlands (Dutch), New Zealand (English), Singapore (English), Spain (Spanish), Switzerland (French, German), United Kingdom (English), United States (English, Spanish).

  • Hi Steve,

Thanks for the response.  I was told by Microsoft Support in South Africa in early March that they had applied for the product to be released in South Africa. This has obviously not happenned yet.  How long does this process take, or is there some reason that it will not be made available in SA?

  • Yes, unfortunately, it apparently hasn't happened. I don't have any information as to when additional countries will be added.

I do see, however, that two additional countries and languages are now supported as of yesterday:

In which countries and languages is Windows Live OneCare available?
The Windows Live OneCare subscription service is available in the following countries and languages: Australia (English), Austria (German), Belgium (Dutch, French), Brazil (Portuguese), Canada (English, French), France (French), Germany (German), Hong Kong (English), Ireland (English), India (English), Italy (Italian), Japan (Japanese), Mexico (Spanish), Netherlands (Dutch), New Zealand (English), Singapore (English), Spain (Spanish), Switzerland (French, German), United Kingdom (English), United States (English, Spanish).

South Africa is still not shown on the list. I don't know what the process involves, but the reasons for not releasing it in a country are typically support and legal/licensing issues. From a support perspective, the regional office may be willing and able to support OneCare, but it may be a matter of licensing.

Since you possess a retail copy of OneCare, however, you should be able to activate using a workaround - make sure that your System language is one of the supported languages above. In Internet Explorer, under Tools/Options, go to languages and make the IE default language/country pair one of the ones above - English-US, for example. Create a LiveID at http://account.live.com and set the location to be one of the supported countries above. Open OneCare, click subscribe, log in with that new ID and select the PIN/Retail key option.

Note that this is an unsupported procedure and that you may still be in the same boat, unable to renew at the end of 12 months, unless you obtain another retail key.
