Should I use BU or not? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have a more of a deployment question here... There's a company which is devided in 3 different companies who sell different products, but in the same industrie. They are all under the main company though and will be using MS CRM.

Data doesn't need to be protected. So that means all the sales or marketing people can see each other's information and what they are working on... So everything can be open in the whole company.

My question is if it is necessary to still make different business units (like sales, marketing, administration or company 1, company 2, company 3) or should I just use the root business unit since everyone is allowed to see all the information anyways?

    Thx

  • A major reason to use Business Unit is security, however although in your case the data doesn't need to be protected, the company does have 3 different department, you may still consider to use BU to devide them - which helps in the future.

  • So suppose I don't use business units now and in 2 years they do want to protect data I can still easily create business units and assign users to a BU right?

So the only reason I would create business units now is to have a better oversight and so that I don't really have to do it again when it's necessary?

  • Hi,

Further to Jim's post have a read of the article below. You will find it useful.

And as Jim said a major benefit of BUs is the ability to manage security but this is not the only reason for creating BUs. To answer your other question yes. You can create BUs in the future and assign users to them. You can also re-structure BUs.  (Change a BUs parentage).

  • Another reason for using business units might be for reporting purposes. Which company generates the most revenue from which products, this kind of thing.
