Sony Vaio Windows XP pro validation issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • My friend's Sony vaio laptop hard disc failed and a local computer repair shop replaced the hard drive with an alternative (not sony) and did not use the original repair disc with the genuine XP (factory installed|) licensed software. He now gets a message that his operating system is not genuine and he is unable to get updates.

Someone mentioned that the reboot disc will not recognise the hard drive...Is that correct and what can he do ?

  • Hello mugwog,

Generally speaking, and in my experience, the vast majority of manufacturer recovery discs work with replacement "bare metal" hard disk drives.

You should encourage your friend to run the Sony recovery disc in order to put back the genuine originally shipped installation of Windows back onto the computer.

  • Dear Dan,

Thanks. I think that the problem here is that he put some other software on his computer as well, which he will lose if re runs the recovery disc. He had only one use on them.
