Add USB Drive without WHS adding it to storage pool RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello, first post so apologies in advance!

I want to add a USB HDD to my WHS but not for use by WHS.  I want to mount this as a drive, and then use robocopy to back up my data to it.  Happy with the scripted mounting/unmounting and robocopy as I already do this on another machine.

I've not added a disk to WHS before hence question.  When I mount it, will WHS automatically 'grab' it?  And, if so, how can I prevent this?

    Thanks!

  • WHS will NOT add it automatically to the storage pool.

  • You can not use current backup software such as ntbackup or commercial packages to automatically backup and restore the whole server. It's no problem if you "manually" copy data from shares to external location.

  • Thank you very much for this.  With this in mind, I don't understand why there has been so much activity on this and other WHS forums about the lack of backup functionality?
