Can a PIN (Product Key) from v1.x be used to renew v2.0? RRS feed

I just recently upgraded OneCare to 2.0.  I also noticed that it's coming up on my renewal date.  Buying a retail package of OneCare1.x can be significantly cheaper than the $49.99 credit card renewal.  Will a product key from 1.x renew my subscription?  It seems that If I had waited to upgrade, renewed, then upgraded, it would work just fine.  So what's the difference, really?

I know Microsoft wants me to pay the full $50.  But if I can save a few bucks, why not?

  • Yes, you can do this.

If your subscription has not expired, go to http://billing.microsoft.com and sign in with your subscription LiveID. (Open OneCare and click help/about to view the subscription LiveID)

Select the OneCare subscription and click on the renew link.

Choose the option to renew with a prepaid PIN or token which is the retail product key.

Enter the 25 character key and proceed.

It can take up to 24 hours for the subscription status to be updated in OneCare.
