Urgent - restore from another computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Thanks in advance for your help, have a issue re the onecare restore facility.

I have a laptop and a desktop bith running vista home premium. I was running onecare on both and using the laptop as the hub. I have been backing all my files up onto a external sata harddrive.

All my work files are on the laptop, it has crashed, blue screen of death. So am trying to restore all those files onto the desktop.

So open up onecare on desktop, plug in backup hard drive, it can be seen and all files are on it zipped up.

I click the backup and restore > Backup location > restore files

I get the chioce of express or custom, click custom restore

then clck restore files from an earlier backup or backup from another computer

It shows central backup device, I click that, next

I then get a message Restore cannot continue
Onecare cant find the PC connected to your backup device. Please make sure that the PC is turned on. Also make sure that this PC and the PC with backup device are connected to the local network/

This I dont understand as the laptop has crahed and the backup device has all files on it.

if I go back and try restoreing all files on from the desktops backup on external harddrive, it works, but not for laptop.

Can anybody help with this as I need to work access the laptops backup asap, thanks

  • Try first making the desktop a hub, then restore your files.

  • As Jim noted, since the laptop was the hub and your backup location was a centralized backup, by now connecting the external drive to your desktop directly, the backup destination has changed from a centralized backup to an external USB drive, which can cause Restore to get confused. Making the desktop the HUB should work. You may then also want to reconfigure Centralized backup first and perform a new full backup from the desktop to the external drive and then perform the steps for the custom restore as you already tried. Failing that, please contact support for further assistance.
