I have a home network that is setup with WLAN only. There is no chance to get a wired connection to the access point. Is the wired line needed all the time or only for setup? the server shouldn't connect to the internet anyway. BT
The requirement for the WHS to be connected to the router with a wired connection is, I believe, for two reasons. First, if you use the Remote Access features, then yes, the server will connect to the Internet. You'll get (in theory) better throughput with a wired connection. Second, no matter how reliable your wireless connection seems to be, all sorts of things can interfere with it, and cause it to drop out momentarily. That can lead to things like corrupted file transfers, backups that don't work, etc.
All that said, at least some beta testers have installed WHS on PCs with only a wireless network connection, and they seem to be reasonably happy with the results.
I'm running fine on a WAN only setup. Using a Belkin (yes.. Belkin, even could get a full refund for the card if I could find the receipt) PCI card on the server.
