Re-install of OEM W7-HP cannot activate RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently upgraded my CPU and mobo, and reinstalled Windows 7 from the OEM disk that I have used on this computer for ~3 years. After solving some annoying hardware issues, everything is working fine all drivers installed etc., however Windows 7 will not activate. I am using the same hard drive and GPU of my previous build, as well as the same case with the license sticker for this version of Windows that I am trying to activate.

  • OEM versions of Windows are not transferable to new computers.  They are only licensed for the hardware upon which they were originally installed.  When the motherboard was swapped, it became a new computer.  You will need to purchase a Retail version of the OS which can be transferred to a new motherboard.

  • Well that's a pain.

  • ...and it's been the case since before Windows XP was launched - but wasn't in any way realistically enforceable until Activation was introduced in 2001.
