Hello malcolm138,
The symptoms you are experiencing (Office cannot decide if it is activated or not; and, a longtime installation of Office XP or 2003 all of a sudden becomes nongenuine) are indicative of the Office license file becoming damaged or corrupted.
Please work thru the Methods in this MS KB article to correct the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275. Most people tell us that after checking Method 1, running the FixIt in Method 2 takes care of the issue.
After running the FixIt, restart the computer. Then open an Office program such as Word 2002, whereupon you should see the Activation Wizard. Activate Office online normally. Restart once more. Then, keeping Office programs closed for the moment, visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button, and Office should validate normally.
Finally, open several Office programs to ensure that you do not see any nongenuine software notices.
Post back to let us know if this worked for you.
