The File Mismatches in the report are nothing to worry about -- they are simply there because you have not installed the WAT update. It *may* be a good idea to install this update, as it provides more assistance in cases such as yours - either go to Windows Update, and install the KB971033 update from there, or download it for offline installation from here....

    Your error code means
    ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED
    or ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT
    (in order presented)
It's likely that the problem is the result of faulty security software, or firewall settings - or a dodgy Internet link.

What security software is installed? - what *was* installed previously? (Norton has a nasty habit of destroying internet capability when you uninstall it).

  • As Noel mentioned, the mismatched WAT files are not the problem since the WAT Update (that adds those files to Windows) is an optional update.

As for the error, I assume the Internet Timeout is occurring during Activation.  In this case (in addition to the suggestions given by Noel) I would recommend trying to Activation by Phone.  To activate by phone, click the Start button and type slui 4 and hit the enter key. The Activate by Phone wizard will launch.  Follow the direction given by the wizard.

Run the SFC  /SCANNOW  command. This will check and repair if necessary any critical Windows system files.

    Click on Start/All programs/Accessories then
Right click on Command Prompt option and select 'Run as administrator'.
At the command prompt enter:  SFC  /SCANNOW

  • The ET Phone Home (WAT) update has not been installed on my test bed computer and I do not have any file mismatch errors after running the Diag tool.

  • You certainly should do - unless it was preinstall as part of an OEM package, or you have some other errors in the report. I've never yet seen a system without KB971033 installed that didn't show the mismatches.

Are you sure it's not listed in the Installed Updates?

The only other thing I can think of is that you may somehow  have rebuilt the System Catalog at some point.

  • It's a multi-boot computer (XP, Win7 Ult 64-Bit, Pro 64-Bit, Win 7 HP 32-Bit, Vista Ultimate 64-Bit) all updates installed except for Win 7 SP1, .Net 4 and KB8971003 as of 4/1/11.

    Keys are TechNet.

Since I'm doing some testing I could install the latest April updates (except for KB8971003) and see if anything changes when I run the Diag tool if you like.

I suspected as much (TechNet/multi-boot) - but it's not necessary to do the update yet (you can email me the current MGADiag report if you like to avoid confusing this thread further - a Belarc or similar report would be interesting as well).
