External drive not backing up RRS feed

  • Question

  •
I have a Vista 32 desktop that has an external drive connected via USB. The drive has been reliably backed up by WHS for months, until very recently. The c:\ drive of the desktop is included in the backup routine and functions fine. When WHS starts to backup the external drive, it stops, citing a connection failure.

I have run the connection troubleshooter with negative results, uninstalled and reinstalled the connector software, run chkdsk/r on the external drive, and successfully backed up other computers. PP1 is installed.

The event log returns this information:

Can anyone give me some assistance with this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Maybe then try to copy the contents of that disk to another location (like a shared folder on the server), delete the partition on the disk, create a new one and copy the files back. After that you may have to exclude the old partition from backup and add the new one via console, select the machine and click configure backup.
Or try to attach the disk to another USB port first.

  • Hello,
try the universal method number 1 for troubleshooting such issues: Run
    chkdsk /f /r
    for that disk.

  • Olaf, changing the USB port did nothing. However, using your suggestion, I copied the files off the external drive to an internal drive, then re-formatted the external drive, and copied the files back to it. So far the backup is working. Thanks for the idea.
