Server 2008 R2 for training?

  Yes, there are a number of possibilities for setting up a VM with Server 2008 R2.

  • Windows 8 Consumer Preview with Hyper-V 3
  • Windows Server 8 with Hypver-V 3
  • VMware Workstation 7+
  • VMware Server
  • Virtualbox

  There are others, but this list should give you a start as far as options.  Microsoft also offers pre-built lab environments that you can download.

  On 2008 you can use the Hyper-V role to have virtual environments. This is one of the roles in Server 2008 and greater.

  One of the advantages of this, is that you dont know to install VSX server. Problem tho is you want to convert over existing VMware images. See the second answer in this threadhttp://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverhyperv/thread/ef8c12f7-c45d-442e-9a30-c43cd87df3b3

  You can of course install VSX server again if you so wish
