2003 or 2008

Question

Hi there, new to this forum... I am certified in 2000 MCSA & MCSE... I use Server 2003 daily. I'm looking to upgade my certs and i'm finding it hard to justify upgrading to a cert based on a 6 yr old O/S.
I'm considering the jump to 2008, but will need to build a lab to get full exposure...
Any advice please?
Many thanks.Tuesday, June 2, 2009 8:31 PM

Hi,
As has been said above, you need to first transition to server 2003
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcse/windows2003/upgrade.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcsa/windows2003/upgrade.mspx
However, from there there is only one exam you need to take to achieve 2008 certification:
MCSA on Windows Server 2003
MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory, Configuration
and
MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure ConfigurationMCSE on Windows Server 2003
MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Configuration
and
MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Configuration
and
MCTS: Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure Configuration
and if you want to take things further, another exam for MCITP Server Administrator:
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-646.mspx
or 3 more for MCITP - Enterprise Administrator
Exam 70-643
Exam 70-620
Or
Exam 70-624Review the preparation guide for Exam 70-620: TS: Microsoft Windows Vista, Configuring
Professional Series exam Exam 70-647
Review the preparation guide for Exam 70-647: PRO: Windows Server 2008, Enterprise Administrator
Hope this helps

Hi,
Well like you said, 'Build a Lab' this would probably be the best way. Get the MS Press books and follow along with the labs and practices. Try to do the same things in 2008 that you can do in 2003. Just play around, break things and try fix them.
You could possibly try set up the same network as your current work network, just using 2008. You could also look into videos, CBT Nuggets is a very good one to look at.
Hope this helps, and let us know if you have any more questions.

As far as I know there is no 2000 to 2008 upgrade exam but there are 2 exams you can take to upgrade to 2003. Then from there you can upgrade to 2008 in about 3 or 4 exams instead of taking 7. So basically for 6 exams you can upgrade to 2003 and 2008 instead of doing 7 and only getting 2008. Regardless of how you get to 08, you will probably have to set up a lab. As for 2003, it can be 6 years old but as long as people are still using it, your cert will be valid.

Hi there,
Thanks for the excellent feedback... I have looked at the upgrade exams from 2000 to 2003 and apparently they where retired in March 2008, so game over there.
Therefore, I thnik the only way forward is to do the full 7 exams for 2003 then upgrade, OR
Go straight to 2008 to the MCTS & MCITP... As the technology will not have changed a great deal between 2003/2008...
I don't think anyway...Thursday, June 11, 2009 9:02 AM -
MCITP Enterprise Administrator is only 5 exams in total anyway :o)

You technically do not have to take all 7 exams over again. Your MCSE on 2000 will count as an elective and I am guessing you took the 70-210 (Win2000) as your client OS, this will count as your client OS on 2003 as well. So you would only have to take 5 exams.
That being said it is up to you if you want to go 2003 or 2008, there is still plenty of demand for 2003 since a lot of companies are still using it.

Good shout Eric... I have just checked and you are correct... 2000 MCSA/E for 1 elective and 2000 O/S for one client exam.
This means I could do the 2003 MCSE as that's what I use day in/out... Then think about 2008 later this year...
This might be a goer...
Thanks alot guys...Thursday, June 11, 2009 4:06 PM
