Smart Phone with full windows 8 pro RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Why aren't there any smart phones that run full Windows 8 Pro?  I'd like a phone that can run all my Windows programs, something like the new Dell: http://www.wpcentral.com/dell-venue-8-pro-unboxing but with phone functionality.  A lot of people would buy it and the technology exists (you'd have to put a 3G/4G transceiver in that Dell for instance)  I want a phone that can run full Office, virtual machines and my legacy Windows and DOS applications.  It is a huge market you guys are underestimating, I know there are Windows RT options, but that is a whole new platform that doesn't have what people need.  Would be nice to run Visual Studio 2012 on my phone.

    Thanks.

  • the technology exists

No, it's still years away. If you don't believe it, list the hardware specs you'd want and compare it to what's available today.

Besides, a phone can already connect to the cloud to do all of that.

  • I second your opinion. I dream of the day I just dock my phone once home (it would be displayed on my 27inch monitor with mouse and keyboard) and use all my Desktop Apps that I need and love. then undock it and take it on its way.

The technology is there. the latest Atom baytrail chip that is in the Dell venue 8 is more than needed and certainly more than any phone needs.

For the love of sanity, just add in 3g/4g and a phone app.  DONE...

I fully expect the "issue" is marketing and market share of sales.  This would absolutely obsolete 95% of laptops and 60% of home computers the day it comes out.

PLEASE Dell or somebody, just put a phone on your wonder device!!!

Technology / software combination is not there only if you are an ARM monkey and believe it is the only chip for a phone... in this regards, you are correct. Full windows 8 will not run on ARM yet....

The technology is there. The latest (IE existing) Intel Atom Baytrail chip runs full windows 8.1 and is small / efficient enough to run on a phone sized device, and already is as the original poster points out with the dell venue 8 example.

Are you suggesting the technology is not there to write a phone app for this device if it had a 4g transceiver?

And how does cloud help you run desktop apps that you need?  Such as Garmin Software or even windows movie maker...?

  • I agree with Bitronic,

We are a consultancy with a host of necessary legacy business software, including one of our own. To have a Windows phone that would also run the windows 8 software would be invaluable.  It would not negate the very simple and constant need for the ultra powerful desktop and laptops.
