Failed to start Live Mesh RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I recently added my workstation to my company domain, and as part of this move, I moved my local user profile to my domain profile. I did this using the Win32_UserProfile WMI class via the ChangeOwner method.

The move worked fine, but now Live Mesh won't start. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, with no success. My user account is a domain admin, as well as a memeber of the local administrators group.

The logs suggest that Live Mesh is unable to register my machine due to some passport issue. I'm also seeing a log entry stating:

    "SetDeviceConsent: IDCRL.SetDeviceConsent failed with PPCRL_E_DEVICEID_ACCESS_DENIED"

I've also tried removing my computer from the Devices tab at mesh.com, and reinstalling. That didn't work either.

For those of you with connect accounts, I posted this issue here:

  • Thanks for filing the bug. It sure seems that the issue is a permissions problem related to the fact that the profile was moved. Interesting scenario.

  • Any chance you could provide a work around? I'm a software engineer, so even if it's technical I'd appreciate it.

I rely heavily on Live Mesh, and it would be a major let down if I can no longer use it on this machine.

  • Unfortunately, I can't. It would seem that when the profile moved, so did specific information used by Live Mesh to identify the PC. It would seem that the problem might have been prevented by first removing Live Mesh before moving the profile, but that's just a guess at this point.
Have you looked at Live Sync? http://sync.live.com as a possible alternative? There's no Live Desktop, but it does sync folders like Mesh does and also has remote desktop capability, though not as nice as Live Mesh in that it uses the native RDP functionality from Windows.

  • I'd rather not have to switch all my replication to Live Sync. I have 5 other machines in my mesh.

Shouldn't I be able to completely remove Live Mesh from this machine? There must be something left behind by Live Mesh that is preventing the reinstall from working.

  • You should be able to remove it, though with the profile move, the uninstaller may be having fits. Your bug report is the way to go for now - if you hear nothing within a few days, please post back. And, if you do hear back on the bug report and it resolves the issue, please update us on the details here.

  • Ok... I'll sit tight.

I removed Live Mesh several times, but as I said, when I reinstall I get the same error.

Don't suppose you want to share any internal documentation as to all the places Live Mesh keeps its files/settings so I can manually go and delete them? :)

    If I had any, I'd share. :-)

  • Can anybody provide a list of steps to complete to manually remove Live Mesh from a PC?

The uninstaller must leave something behind.

    From the "Known Issues" sticky:

Issue: Live Mesh is not installed or is installed partially and the customer sees a dialogue stating that Live Mesh cannot install because it is already installed.  Customer is not able to uninstall Live Mesh.

Cause: This experience is typically caused by an interruption in the normal installation process leaving the Registry in a state where certain entries are not removed or added properly.

Possible Workarounds: The Live Mesh installer, LiveMesh.exe, can be used with switches from a command line to install, uninstall, or repair Live Mesh. Note: sometimes you may need to repair the Live Mesh installation before uninstalling it.

         Using LiveMesh.exe switches
              1. Download the LiveMesh.exe installer
              2. Navigate to http://www.mesh.com/ and log in using your Live ID
              3. Click on the Devices tab
              4. Select Add Device
              5. Select your platform choice then click Install
              6. Pick the option to Save (remember this location)
If you are installing on Vista, you will need to run these switches from an Elevated Command Prompt.
              1. Click on Start
              2. Select All Programs
              3. Select Accessories
              4. Click on Command Prompt (Please note: if you are installing on a Windows Vista computer, you will need to right-click and select Run
                  as administrator)
              5. Once you are in your Command Window navigate to the location that you saved the LiveMesh.exe installer and type one of the following:
LiveMesh.exe /repair (assumes the product was already installed or needs to be repaired)
                      LiveMesh.exe /uninstall (removes the product)
LiveMesh.exe (no switch, installs the product)

If installing/uninstalling from a Command Prompt does not work, you may need to manually remove the Live Mesh Registry entries.

          Manually editing the Registry
               1. Click Start
               2
    . Click Run
               3. Type Regedit and hit Enter (if you are on Vista you will need to agree to a UAC prompt)
               4. In the Registry Editor remove the following Registry entries:
                     HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\9D1E4BCD781B45B479E1418784C5A935
                     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\<YOURSID>\Products
\9D1E4BCD781B45B479E1418784C5A935   (NOTE:  <YOURSID> value will be unique to you.)

  • Thanks, but neither of these worked.

Live Mesh appears to uninstall fine. When I attempt to reinstall it, I still get the error.

Have you tried using a different LiveID for Live Mesh. I doubt that the uninstall is your issue.
