windows vista home premium product key you typed is invalid for activation RRS feed

  • Question

  • After a year of owning my Dell Inspiron 1525 with preinstalled Vista, I am now getting this message: "windows vista home premium product key you typed is invalid for activation" and upon re-entering key I still get that the key is invalid. I am choosing to "access computer with limited functionality".

I have been reading forums in regard to this issue.  And I have tried the recommended steps I have found to reactivate the prod key by phone (why can't they just post the phone number??):

locate %windir%\system32 cmd.exe and to right click and choose run as administrator. When I complete this step I get "not enough" quota is available to process this cmd. I cannot proceed to any of the other steps.

    Help!!

  • Hello JT_Dallas,

The "Not Enough Quota" error is not specifically related to the Non-Genuine issue and from reports it seems that a couple of reboots till you no longer receive the error, is the workaround.

As for the Non-Genuine issue, I believe it's one of two issue. However, the below steps work for either issue so should resolve the problem regardless of which it is.

I believe Vista's Licensing Store is corrupt or is unreadable for some reason.
Would you try the following to recreate the Store:

    1) Open an Internet Browser

    2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    12) You will likely be asked to enter a Product Key and/or Activate. Use the key found on the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer and activate using the By Phone method.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • I get as far as Step 4 - after I click on Run as Admin, I get the message: "not enough quota is available to process this cmd" so I cannot get past this step.
