  • Are you trying to install a new instance of CRM?
Do you have Sys Admin rights on the SQL Server?
Is the CRM and SQL server on the same box?
What is the CRM Server OS, SQL Server OS & SQL version?
At what point in the installation do you receive the error?
Are there any errors in the Event Viewer on the server?

  • - new instance of crm 4.0
    - we have sys admin rights on the sql.
    - crm and sql in same server
    - server 2008, sql server 2005. also have all updates.
    - after the user inputs are assigned while installing in progress
    - there is no error in the event viewer

  • did you select to get the recommended updates at the beginning of the installation?
did you receive any warnings or errors during the environment check?
what name are you giving the CRM server?
If it is a long name, try to shorten it and ensure there are no special characters in the name
Did you install SQL 2005 SP2

You can also check the log file under Programs, Microsoft Dynamic CRM and review those files to look for errors.  This is a bit of a tedius process but you might learn something from the log file if you parse through it.
