New Hardware = Buy Windows Again for a New Product Key? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings,

I have a 5 year old laptop which came with DOS. I had then purchased a genuine copy of Windows Vista Home Professional from a reseller in Kolkata, India.

Now my old laptop is depreciated and I am considering disposing it to buy a new one.

I would like to know if I can continue to use the same copy of Windows Vista with the same product key on my new laptop (after formatting the old laptop so that no one else can use it) or does Microsoft demand that I buy a new copy for use?

  • If the Windows Vista licensed you purchased is a "retail" license, it can be used on a different computer after it is removed form the previous computer.  If the Windows Vista license is an "OEM" license, it cannot be used on a different computer since it is permanently bound to the original computer it was installed and activated on.
