Windows 7 activation issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I work in the education system and we are having issues with Windows activation.  At our schools we are behind "NetSweeper" and it is somehow blocking the activation process.  I need to know what ports, IP addresses or whatever it is that MS uses to activate Windows so I can have the "tunnel" created to allow this service to run properly.

Right now if we take down our blocking rules the computers will activate just fine and work perfectly however with the blocking rules in place they will not activate and they just time out.  we have ports 80 and 443 open and everything is setup as it should be according to anything I can find online.

I have run the WGA diagnostic and the results are as follows:

I have called MS directly via the activation hotline and had zero satisfation there, it was like talking to a robot, the guy had no idea what I was saying and just kept repeating "sir can I have your installation ID so I can assist you in activating your MS product".  I don't think he spoke any english outside of the script he was given.

We have machines that have been activated previously but for some reason are now coming up "not genuine" and they won't reactivate because of the firewall.  Taking down the firewall is not an acceptable practice because we are always working in a live environment and by taking down the firewall it allows everyone to get to all sites which is not acceptable in a school environment.

Any further help would be much appreciated.

    Please attempt validation at
    also, use the Diagnostics at
what response do you get from the two sites?

(Normally, your install would pass validation, because it is still within the Grace Period – we need to know that this still happens)

    I assume you’ve seen the following KB - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291983 – which I think still applies to Win7.

  • It will be either on your COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment), or in the retail packaging if you bought Windows 7 yourself.

You can also possibly recover it by using Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com) - together with a lot more information.

    NOTE:

Computers that come pre-installed with Windows from large manufacturers usually come with two Product Keys.

OEM SLP: This is the key that came in Windows (from the factory). It works by connecting to a BIOS flag (the SLIC table) found only on  computers from that Manufacturer. It also checks for the existence of proper matching licenses in the OS itself. Once it sees both, it self-activates every time the machine is rebooted.

COA SLP: This is the key seen on the sticker located on the side, bottom or in the battery compartment of your machine. This key is for use if the OEM SLP self-activation stops working for whatever reason.
