Microsoft Office suddenly 'Not Genuine' RRS feed

  • Question

  •

    Hello,

I seem to have the same problem as many people. I have had this laptop for around 3 years and have had no problem with Office until the last couple of weeks. I mainly only use Word and I have been recieving a message informing me that my copy is 'Not Genuine' and from today that I have 12 days left until it will be marked as such.

My partner purchased the laptop from a high-street chain, but neither of us are able to find the original program disc (he can't even remember if it came with one) so I am unable to reinstall the program if that is required.

Please see the diagnostic report below. Any help would be gratefully received, and as jargon free as possible would be lovely!

    Regards,

    Keeley Saunders

  • Hello Keeley Saunders,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage - 114 Blocked VLK 2
    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0

Regarding Office, the report says you have a Blocked VLK, which means that (a) your computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office XP Professional w/Front Page installed, and that (b) a Blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement.  (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.)  However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.

If you are an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing (VL) materials such as a VL disc, and you certainly should not have received a Blocked Product Key.  You should have been sold Genuine retail licensed software.

Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand a full refund.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you think that you qualify for the Genuine Office Offer, apply for the Offer thru the Learn More Online link that the OGA Notifier is displaying.

Since you are in the UK, the info at this web page applies to you and offers another option:  http://www.microsoft.com/uk/licensing/homeuser/product-identification-service.mspx

If your use of this Volume Licensing edition of Office XP Professional w/Front Page is in association with an organization that has a Volume Licensing Agreement, then please contact the IT support staff of the organization for further assistance.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

  • Hi Keeley Saunders,

According to the WGA data provided, your product key for Office was blocked by the request of the organization it was issued to. If your computer is part of a large organization, please contact your organization's system administrator/IT office. If your computer is not part of a large organization, please contact the organization you purchased office from and possibly report it to Microsoft Piracy at 1-800-RULEGIT.

  • Thank you for your help, but it seems that your suggestions have ignored my previous information about no proof of purchase (it was three years ago) and a lack of software disc (as ex-students we've moved three times in as many years and can only presume it's been lost in one of the moves).

Without this am I going to have to buy a new copy of Office and am I going to be able to install this on my laptop without problems?

    Regards,

    Keeley Saunders

  • Hello Keeley Saunders,

Perhaps knowing that if you were to find the discs, and if these found discs had the proper characteristics to qualify for free replacment, would provide ample motivation for a more thorough search? :-)

If still no joy in finding the discs, then Yes, you would be in the market*** to purchase a Genuine copy of Office.  The current version is Office 2010.  You can download a Trial of the edition that meets your needs here:  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/try-office-2010-FX101868838.aspx?WT%2Emc%5Fid=ODC%5FENUS%5FHomeABTest%5FT2

The current version of Office seems to like to be the only game in town, so if you decide to install the Trial of Office 2010, it would be best to remove the old Office XP and restart before installing the new Office.  (But, don't forget since you don't have installation discs for Office XP, that would be an irreversible action.)

***Please note that if you do nothing, your current nongenuine installation of Office continues to work normally, and you do not lose any documents, email or other data.  "Marked as Nongenuine" means that Office will have a new menu entry that provides a link to purchase a Genuine license for Office, and when Office starts, it will nag you about being nongenuine.

  • Hi Dan,

Thanks for a straight forward reply. I know I'd get a free replacement (that's the killer!!) but we really don't have the discs - I've rummaged - and we only moved two months ago and I don't recall packing them away. I'm a naturally very organised person but unfortunately my boyfriend is not and knowing him he probably threw the lot out not thinking it was important! You don't need to tell me how reckless that is! :D

Anyway, it's nice to know the programME will still run. I thought it would stop functioning, so at least I still have a working (nagging) Word until I get round to purchasing a genuine replacement.

    Regards,

    Keeley Saunders
