Firefox Plugin Problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello.

    I'm having a problem running the Firefox WGA Plugin.

    I am running Windows 2000 SP4, with Firefox 1.5.0.11 - I know this is the windows XP Validation forum, but there isn't a 2000 forum, even though Windows 2000 still needs to validate to get Certain stuff from the microsoft Download center - In this case, DirectX - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&DisplayLang=en

    Running the test at http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/, It fails on:

    Microsoft Genuine Advantage plugins are installed and loaded
    ActiveX controls connect with Microsoft validation servers

    Pressing the Ressolve Now button, it takes me to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/Instructions.aspx?displaylang=en&s=ci,cn&cnt=1, and offers me an exe to download

    When I try to run it, I get the following failure:

    Installation Error: Installation Information data unavailable

    Doing a WGA Forum search takes me to this post http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=551748&SiteID=25

    I Downloaded the wgaplugininstall.exe, then extracted it using winRAR

    However, the only files it extracted were:

    PluginInstaller.exe
    npOGAPlugin.dll
    Setup.xml
    nsIOGAPlugin.xpt

    (In Explorer Folder view, I have show hidden and Protected Operating System files enabled)

    I don't have npLegitCheckPlugin.dll and nsILegitCheckPlugin.xpt to copy into C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins and C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components, respectively.

    I tried running PluginInstaller.exe directly, but it gave the same Installation Information data unavailable message.

    Doing a google search on the error only gives 18 results (http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=mozclient&num=100&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&q=%22Installation+Information+data+unavailable%22)

    The most useful of which is a Channel9 Discussion with several people commenting on having problems getting it to work, but no solution: http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=226945

    Here's the WGA Log.

  • Hello Dave,

    Here are some additional instructions to follow regarding the alternative validation process.

    WGA

    1.       Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    2.       Type in “iexplore http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=39204” then click ‘OK’. You will be prompted to download “LegitCheckControl.cab”.

    3.       Choose Open. Once this completes, a window will open showing two files, LegitCheckControl.dll and LegitCheckControl.inf. Leave this window open for now.

    4.       Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    5.       Type in “system32”, then click ‘OK’. (If you are running Windows XP, you may need to click “show files” to allow access to this system directory.)

    6.       Drag the LegitCheckControl.dll file from the window that was open into the system32 directory. If you are prompted to overwrite a file, choose ‘Yes’ to overwrite any existing file. (If you are running Vista, you may be prompted to provide administrator permission to complete the action. If so, press “Continue” and allow it.)

    7.       Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    8.       Type “regsvr32 LegitCheckControl.dll”, and then click ‘OK’.

    9.       You should see a dialog saying “DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckControl.dll succeeded.”

    Please let us know how this works and if you need further assistance.

    Thank you,

  • Third-party browsers are not supported when accessing the WGA site.  Use IE to access the site.

  • If It's not supported, why did the Microsoft download center offer me this plugin to install, instead of warning that I'm using an unsupported browser, and have this part in the FAQ (http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en)

    Q: Will the validation process work with the Mozilla Firefox Web browser?
    A:
    Yes. You can complete the validation process using the Firefox Web browser. Users of the Firefox browser are automatically offered Firefox browser plug-ins for WGA or OGA validation and instructions for plug-in installation. The browser plug-ins provides the same Windows or Office validation as the ActiveX controls. If you are having trouble running the Firefox browser plug-ins, you may use the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic site for troubleshooting.

  • regarding Carey Frisch's sugguestion:

    Running the .hta application gives the following message:

    Validation is not currently supported for this version of Windows or for this non-Microsoft operating system.
    It appears that you are using an operating system that is not currently supported by the validation process. Only the following operating systems are currently supported:
     * Windows XP Home Edition
     * Windows XP Professional
     * Windows XP Starter Edition
     * Windows XP Media Center Edition
     * Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
     * Windows Vista

    [0x80080206]

    Regarding Stephen MS's sugguestion:

    I replaced LegitCheckControl.dll, and registered it, both of which appeared secuessful.

    I then tried to download DirectX Runtime from www.microsoft,com/downloads, which worked fine, after installing the plugin..

    However, while testing, I tried to validate my system from http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/Default.aspx?displaylang=en, then clicking Validate Windows, which gave the following message:

    Validation is not currently supported for this version of Windows or for this non-Microsoft operating system.
    It appears that you are using an operating system that is not currently supported by the validation process. Only the following operating systems are currently supported:
     * Windows XP Home Edition

     * Windows XP Starter Edition
     * Windows XP Media Center Edition
     * Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
     * Windows Vista

    So, while this is an improvement, and I can now get genuine downloads from the Microsoft Download center, it appears Windows 2000 is in a strange limbo where it isn't part of the Genuine Microsoft Software program, but needs be in the program to get certain downloads and services from Microsoft. As the .hta application does not appear to work with Windows 2000, while not affecting the majority of users (Myself included), this could be a problem for a small subset of Windows 2000 users who don't use IE- or Mozilla- based web browsers.
