Strange problem with adding new hard drive RRS feed

  • Question

  •  My home server has been running fine with two hard drives, 1 PATA 160gb drive and 1 SATA 400GB drive.   I added another 250GB SATA drive which is seen fine in my bios and also in Home Server.

When I try to add this hard drive in Server Storage, The wizard starts up, I tell it to add the new drive to increase storage space, and as soon as I hit finish on the wizard dialog.... *POW* the server instantly shuts down.  It will not boot with the power button until I unplug the power cord from the back of the power supply.

Once home server restarts, the new hard drive is still there waiting to be added. Same thing happens everytime.   Any idea on this?

Seems like a power supply issue, but why does it manifest only when trying to add the drive if so?

  • That is really odd behavior. I would have thought as well if it weren't power supply related it would bomb on startup. However, since it hasn't been added to the pool until after you do the wizard then it really isn't being spun up until that point. So it might just been the power supply has a weak rail.

What is the wattage of the PSU? How many devices do you have hooked up to it?

Is the 250 drive new or used?

Don't suppose you have a spare PSU laying around to try out.

  • If it is not the power supply (try another cable if possible), you also could try to reinitialize the disk as outlined in this FAQ.
