Activation works until the following day and then OGA notification appears RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am desperate - what am I doing wrong?

PC purchased from OEM in Feb 2002 with official master CDs for MS Win XP Pro and Office XP Pro.
Firewall and AV by Comodo and resident anti-spyware Comodo BOC.
My last Office validation was approximately Nov 08.
In March 09 I had to reformat drive after crash. I added extra RAM.
Since then XP has validated fine but I cannot get Office activation to stick no matter what I try. I have tried it using both IE and Firefox.
Each time I try again, it re-triggers the installation of Office SP3 and various updates so I am just going round in circles.

    1.  I installed it clean on newly formatted drive registering and activating - that was fine.
    2.  I accepted OGA on automatic updates, ran it and that was fine until the next day.
    3.  I deleted all data.dat files in Office Data folder (eventually including the data.bak file) and OGA Data folder.
    4.  I have re-activated and the site says it is fine.
    5.  I have run diag file and it says it is genuine and activated.
    6.  The next day I get the OGA notification in the tray again and the diag report says it is not genuine.
    7.  I have tried steps 2 - 6 several times over the last few weeks in case there was a server problem at your end.

The only thing I can think of is that I had heard that the business ceased trading towards the end of last year, but cannot understand how that could affect my 2002 purchase.

Anyway, I have copied both diag reports so you can see the results.

    3:20 p.m. 4/05/2009

Installed MS Pub again after removal. Tried to activate - says it is already acticated.

  • Hello Naki,

Try uninstalling Comodo BOC (rather than trying to disable).

Use and observe for a few days.

If still a problem, try uninstalling Comodo firewall and AV completely, and substitute the Windows Firewall and another AV product for the time being.

If that solves the problem with Office activation/validation, then report the issue to the Comodo support boards for further investigation:  http://forums.comodo.com/index.php

  • Hi Naki,

Just following up to see if removing the Comodo BOC program corrected your genuine Office activation/validation problem.

  • Hi Dan,

    Thanks for the follow-up.

I have been taking it one step at a time. I used the clean-up tool and re-installation option to make sure nothing was being left behind as I went along.

Removal of BOC had no effect at all. It appears that they have stopped work on this standalone and it is to be incorporated into the main security program approx May 12th.

The Comodo anti-virus removal didn't seem to be the problem either, so it looks as if it may be the firewall.

Last night I completed the whole series of replacements and am now running Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and AVG. So far the this morning the notification has not come up and the report is still showing activation has stuck.

I will wait until tomorrow morning as sometimes it takes a little while before appearing.  If it has not re-appeared after I turn the PC on tomorrow morning, I will take the problem to the Comodo Forum.

Many thanks for your help. I will let you know the outcome.

Next day - I'm afraid it came back this morning and the report showed the usual 'not activated'.
I am trying one last thing. As sole user, I do not 'logon' at start up. I have set up a password for myself. At this point, the 'OGA' tray notification has disappeared. I will see if it return again tomorrow morning.

    Cheers,
    Rosemarie

  • Hi Dan,

Today (16 May in NZ), that little star is back in the notification tray.

This is with Win Firewall, Win Defender and AVG Antivirus running and Comodo products completely cleaned off.
I also set up a password for force a proper logon.

I hope you can help - it is so time consuming and frustrating having to delete the dat files and re-activate every time I was to use office.

  • Hi Dan,

I have given up. I am going to switch over to OpenOffice and possibly my old Lotus 1-2-3. I have just lost so much time over this issue and I guess I am not the only one. I started with Windows in the old days with the very first version for AT, then 311 and onwards, but this is just too much to deal with.

I guess the powers that be believe the needs of the company outweigh the needs of their old customers.

Thanks for your trouble in trying to help me.

    Rosemarie
