Problems installing on Mac RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have followed the instructions at http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=live_mesh&market=EN-US&querytype=keyword&query=eciveddda for installing on a Mac but its not working. here are those instructions:

    1. Click link to go to the Live Mesh website Go to the Live Mesh website and sign in using your Windows Live ID.
    2. On the Devices page, click Add Device
    3. In the drop-down menu, select Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard), then click Install.
    4. In the Live Mesh window that opens after the download is complete, drag the Live Mesh icon into your Applications folder.
    5. Double-click the Applications folder, then double-click Live Mesh.
    6. In the Sign In dialog box, sign in using your Windows Live ID.
    7. In the Add Device to Live Mesh dialog box, type a name for your device, then click Add Device.

Everything is fine up to and including step 5. However, double-clicking Live Mesh  in the applications folder does not cause anything to happen. No sign-in dialog box appears. I have also added Live Mesh to the dock and double-clicking on it there doesn't do anything either.

Any tips to help diagnose the problem would be great. I am not au fait with macs (this is my wife's mac) so a dummies guide to sorting this out would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    -Jamie

    Jamie,

    To gather the logs manually:
Right-click on the Live Mesh app in the Finder and select Show Package Contents.  Inside the Resources folder is an executable called PackageLogs.  You can run it from the Terminal or just double-click it.

Once you have the logs, please open a bug through Connect and attach the logs, then post the Connect Feedback ID here so that I can track it internally.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

    Hi Ben,
OK, done that. Is something supposed to happen? Where do the logs appear? I'm assuming on my desktop but nothing has appeared.

Here's the output from running PackageLogs:

Last login: Fri Feb  6 07:13:51 on ttyp1
    /Applications/Live\ Mesh.app/Contents/Resources/PackageLogs; exit
    Welcome to Darwin!
    helen-beirnes-computer:~ helenbeirne$ /Applications/Live\ Mesh.app/Contents/Resources/PackageLogs; exit
    dyld: Symbol not found: ___stack_chk_guard
      Referenced from: /Applications/Live Mesh.app/Contents/Resources/../Frameworks/LiveMeshCommon.framework/Versions/A/LiveMeshCommon
      Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

    Jamie,

Here's the latest I've received from our Mac developers:

What version of the OS is he running?  If it is 10.4 then this is unfortunately expected.  We do not run on 10.4  If his OS is 10.5.x then it looks like his installation is bad.  The  ___stack_chk_guard should be in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib library.  This can be verified by using the following command line in the terminal.app

    nm /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib | grep __stack_chk_guard

Running this on my machine I get the following

    0016a4e0 D ___stack_chk_guard

This means that the symbol is indeed in the library.

I assume you're on OS 10.5.X (I'm inferring that from your initial post), hence according to our devs, there seems to be something wrong with the install.  I'll keep working with the devs if you have more information that you think might be relevant, but at this point it does appear that we're reaching the limits of our troubleshooting in this case.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments, or if you try anything else and learn something new.  I'd like to help you resolve this issue if possible.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Not having access to a Mac or experience with the Mac client, I can't offer any advice, Jamie. Hopefully, you won't ahve to wait much longer for a reply.

  • There seems to be a number of bugs regarding Live Mesh install on OS X (mine dumps logs and reports "failed" as soon as it loads). The best suggestion is to submit your logs and wait, unfortunately the Mac team seem to be swamped, since my bug has been open since the start and no comments have been posted to it :(

    Good Luck!

  • Hey Jamie are you still having problems with the Mac install?  We've had a couple builds go out that may have resolved it.

  • Hi Ken,

Just tried re-installing it.Same issues. I double-click on it inside "Applications" and it does that launching motion that makes it look like its opening up - but then nothing.

    Any suggestoins would be appreciated.

  • Hi Jamie,

Here's the feedback I received from our Mac developers:

You can try collecting logs (though you will have to manually do the PackageLogs thing since the app isn’t starting).

Otherwise, it might be a system config issue. You can try repairing permissions or reinstalling the OS.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I'm sure that reinstalling the OS isn't an attractive solution... :(

    Thanks,

    Ben.

Thanks Ben. How do I do that (i.e. manually collect logs) then?

You're right by the way - no way I'm uninstalling the O/S, certainly not on the premise that that might be the problem.

  • Jamie, there is no time waste when we learn something!
Even if it is the documentation, it is good to have this information available in multiple places. So, if someone is trying to install on a Mac and comes here to see why they are having a problem, discovering this thread will provide the answer.
    :-)
