Software Protection File not working RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an Acer Aspire running Windows 7 and using AVG as virus protection and ASC to keep things running smoothly.  I have been getting a message claiming than my copy of Windows 7 is not genuine, build 7601.  After considerable attempts at various suggestions, including attempting to restore Windows a few times using my recovery disks, I have found that the Software Protection service is stopped and will not start.  The error claims that Windows cannot find the sppsvc.exe file, although it is clearly in the C:\windows\system32 folder.  Attached is the diagnostic report.  Presumably because of this the updates and some other programs, such as Silverlight and Adobe Reader, will not install because the MS Installer does not exist.

I do have a key in the Windows/Servicing/Version file and I do, of course, have my Product Key.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • (Have you EVER used Norton software on this machine?)

Please run the following commands, and post the results.

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SPLDR /S

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SLSVC

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\Legacy_SPPSVC

    They may show something

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • ....oh - and do yourself and your machine a favour, and get rid of ASC - it's little more than scareware, and causes damage to many systems.

  • Thanks very much for the prompt reply.  No, I have never, ever used Norton that I know of.  If it was originally installed, I would have immediately removed it and I have owned this computer for over a year.

Thanks for the advice about ASC.  I have been using it for many years on the advice of some fairly knowledgable people and have had no problems.  However, I suspect that this could be the subject of a separate thread.

Here are the results of the run:

  • This is the cause of the problem...

    ConfigFlags    REG_DWORD    0x401

This is often caused by having the remnants of Norton still installed. - so let's see if the usual cleanup works.

Download the Norton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all other programs, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine  whether it asks for it or not.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

    then post another MGADiag report.

  • Thank you very much.  This seems to have fixed the problem.  I have rebooted with no alerts and managed to install all of the updates, which was what I was trying to do when I got the initial alert.  T

  • IOBit software is ALL to be avoided in my opinion - I class it as being close to ransomware.

Incidentally both the above script outputs show no problems at the time.

Please post a new MGADiag report.
