Hard drive temperature thresholds in Vail RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does anyone know what these are set to and how to adjust them?

I keep getting a "Data Errors were detected....." warnign however when I open the dashboard there is no problem with either of the storage drives.

This leads me to beleive it may be a heat problem as the weather has got hotter. I have installed Speedfan and it's reporting the drives running at between 45 and 55 degrees.

  • I do not think the "Filter Manager failed" errors are related to your drives being EARS.

I do see these errors on my VAIL server and reported this issue to Connect. Not sure why these errors are reported but the server seems to be functional as far as I can tell.

VAIL (or any Windows OS that I know of) does not monitor the hardware status like CPU or drive temperature.
Some BIOSes and CPU's have some build protection agains damage due to CPU overheating. OEM Manufactures (like HP, ACER, etc) may choose to add this kind of additional functionality to the OS or server application.

Depending on the drive usage, I do not think these are abnormal operating values. Just make sure the temperatures do not exceed the maximum values as specifed by the drives manafacturer.
Personally I try to keep the drive temparatures as low as possible especially when idle. For my Westen Digital drives I do get a bit nervous when drive temperatures exceed 50 degrees celcius for longer periods unless it is obvious the drive is doing "hard work".

PS - Concerning the errors: where do you get the "Data Errors were detected....."?

If they are comming from the VAIL launchpad they should be also listed in Dashboard (Alerts, Alert viewer).
When you click the alert: what does it say?
If you delete the alert: does it come back?
Click the starage drives, properties, try check and repair?

RDP into VAIL and check the Windows Event List. Are any related system errors reported?

  • I have checked via RDP:

Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\DriveExtenderVolume21'.  This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot.  The final status was 0xc000014f.

This error is repeated 5 times.

Both drives are WD AFD WDEARS10's

  • If you check the "Known issues" above, you will see that Microsoft doesn't recommend the use of an Advanced Format Drive as the system drive. That said, if you managed to install I wouldn't expect further issues.

Could you please report a bug on Connect?

  • I have installed ok and other than this and some minor copy speed issues (only getting 30 - 40 Mbps) things have been going well.

The 6 errors are for Volumes 18 to 23.

If no-one has an answer I will bug it.

  • The only problem I've had that might be related is that a shared folder is not available to my library on my W7 PC as it's not indexed.

This seems to be happening to non AFD drives also as per this submission to connect:

  • I also have the "Filter Errors" between 7-14 a day and it looks like they are in groups of 7 which is the amount of "shared folders" that I have except the Network Computer backups folder.

I would like to see this issue on Connect that you have the link to but it can't find it, private maybe the setting. I also tried to just look up "559947" and it didn't find it that way.

  • I seem to have stumbled across a workaround.

I accessed via RDP and used the disk tools to repair the hard drives (via properties) on each of the drives. I did this for all 7 of my shared drives and then restarted.

Since then I've had no errors, previously they were appearing immediately.

(interesting... will check out if this applies to the error I get on my test server)
Please add your work-arround to your feedback also?

  • Hello Don,

(*err*) I had this issue submitted as private feedback.
Please retry opening ID#559947? ("Filtermanager ID#3 errors in system event log.")

  • I see the same error in Event Viewer, but no problems reported in the Dashboard.  Added my vote to bug #559947.

Joe, do you mean using the standard Windows disk tools such as chkdsk.exe, aka My Computer -> rightclick a HDD -> properties -> Tools tab -> Error Checking?

Or did you use the Vail Dashboard -> Server Folders & HDDs -> rightclick a HDD -> properties -> Check & Repair tab?

It sounds like the former, but if so, wouldn't that dangerously sidestep the WHS filesystem driver?

  • Hi Richard

Yes I meant the first. My Vail system has been glitchy since. Not sure if iuts related but have had the following issues:

    https://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer/feedback/details/569580/connector-wont-reinstall-on-main-windows-7-ultimate-x64-pc

    https://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer/feedback/details/574668/error-0x80070510-storage-policy-blocks-that-type-of-file

    The second just wouldn't work.

By the way, as I will need to reinstall shortly, is an RC on the way?

MS has made no announcements regarding possible future builds for testing.  You should check the WHS blog periodically as any announcments regarding a new build will undoubtedly be there first.
