  • Question

  • Hello,

I would like to get a Certificate in SQL/Database development/administration. I was talking to a MS Certified training company, and they suggested to take the following courses in order to obtain an MCITP Certification:

    M 2779-Implementing a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Database
    M 2780-Maintaining a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Database
    M 2781-Designing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Server-Side Solutions
    M 2782-Designing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Databases
M 2783-Designing the Data Tier for Microsoft SQL Server 2005
M 2784-Tuning and Optimizing Queries Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005
    M 2786-Designing a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Infrastructure
M 2787-Designing Security for Microsoft SQL Server 2005
M 2788-Designing High Availability Database Solutions Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005
M 2789-Administering and Automating Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Databases and Services 2005
M 2790-Troubleshooting and Optimizing Database Servers Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005

    I would have some questions:
    1. Is their information correct?
    2. What exams do I have to take after these courses?
    3. What happens if I fail one exam?
    4. Is the MCITP world wide recognized (I live in Romania)?

    Thank you very much.

  • Hi

For the MCITP DBA certification you need 3 exams. The first of these is the MCTS SQL Server 2005 exam which is exam number 70-431. The link provides the information about the exam what can be examined and the courses associated with it.

The other 2 exams are what are known as Professional level exams and they deal with design considerations, advanced topics and such. The exams you need to do are 70-443 and 70-444. Once you have passed these 2 exams and have also completed the other exam you will get the MCITP. Database Administrator certification.

To answer the remainder of your questions

    1. Their information seems correct, but you can always use the book and trial software with virtual machines if you prefer.
    2. The exams are listed above for you.
    3. If you fail exam, nothing happens. You can just retake it if you wish. It will not show up in your final results, only the exams you have passed are shown.
    4. MCITP is recognised worldwide. Sometimes HR departments are not fully aware of the differences so make sure to highlight your SQL ability.

    Best of luck in them

  • Hi

The recommended book is the MS Press MCTS Training Kit: Implementing and Maintaining SQL Server 2005 (ISBN: 978-0735622715)  Amazon link

You can download Virtual PC 2007 free from Microsoft and then you can get the trial versions of Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. Each of these versions are activated for 180 days allowing you to install the software and get used to it

You can make a couple of virtual machines and have them networked all from one machine which will allow you to work in a virtual network environment and practice concepts from the book such as log shipping, mirroring and replication for example. It will also get you used to installing the software and working with the UI which is very important.
