Moving data off of a failing drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have four drives in my WHS system.  One of the drives is starting to fail, so I would like to move the data off of this drive onto the other drives before the drive actually fails.

I do not have data duplication turned on.

    Any suggestions on moving data

Remove the drive through the Console (Server Storage tab).  WHS will move the data from that drive to another drive in the server.  Once the process is complete, shut down the server and physically remove the drive from the server.

  • Kariya21 has given you good advice. However, depending on the exact problem with the drive, you may find that the drive removal will fail. In that case, the recovery method is to physically remove the drive from the server, then remove the drive using the console, accepting any warnings that are displayed along the way. Afterward, you will have to connect the drive to some computer and copy the files under <driveletter>:\DE\Shares\etc. back to your server, as (without duplication) they will be broken. Also depending on the exact issue with the drive, you may not be able to recover all files..

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
