Microsoft Discussions

    Question

  • Hi,
I remember there was a Microsoft website with different discussions groups, I found it some months ago. If you'd sign up for an account you would receive a (public) displayname@discussions.microsoft.com email alias. Do you remember the name of the website? Stefan Blom, du kanske kan svara på den här frågan? Jag såg att du hade en discussions.microsoft.com e-postadress.

    Thanks!

  • The MSDN/TechNet/Answers forums all use a microsoft account for sign in. Some info here.

  • Oh and I've found the help page, https://www.microsoft.com/wn3/locales/help/help_en-us.htm with information about the website/email address I'm talking about. I've also tried ssearching on Google, Bing and Yahoo but can't find anything. I remember it was some kind of forum, at least.

  • Ok, that page is more or less defunct now. The microsoft NNTP newsgroups were abandoned several years ago.

When they first started they were purely NNTP (you had to have an NNTP reader to access them). Later they exposed a web interface to the same NNTP groups. At some point they tried to tie in a recognition system and that may have been the email addresses you're thinking of. At any rate it is all web forums based now.

All the NNTP posts / conversations were archived on deja news which google bought years ago and still maintains the archive.

  • I'm quite sure I found the website not more than two months ago. It was called "Microsoft News Groups" or "MS Discussions Groups" or something like that.

  • Hmm, ok, is there another way to get an @discussions.microsoft.com email address?
    Sunday, March 13, 2016 6:48 PM
  • Back when they were functional many other providers would subscribe to the news feeds thereby replicating with them. I think some of them are still functional as islands though. But no question the Microsoft NNTP groups are long gone.

What technology are you looking for?

  • Just some kind of cool (Microsoft?) email address which isn't @outlook or @gmail.com. I thought @discussions.microsoft.com would work. Do you know something else? I know, for example that @name.onmicrosoft.com is included in O365.

    Also, what's this social.microsoft.com forum?

  • Also, what's this social.microsoft.com forum?

Just one of the various brandings. TechNet is IT related, MSDN is development related. The one you mentioned seems a catch all.

You can make it most anything you like via aliasing.

They can help you with that over here.
