Deleting OneCare backups

Question
-
For about six months now, I've been using OneCare for a daily automated
backup of my data. I’m a professional writer who earns her living on her computer and so I take backup seriously. Now I find that my 250-GB external storage device has
only about 5 GB free. I clearly need to delete some of my old backups, but
how do I know which files I can clear out safely?
I assume the huge set of zip files created when I first ran the program
constituted a complete backup and that what's been created since has been
incremental backups. If I clear out older incremental backups, don't I risk
losing backup for files worked with since the initial full backup, but not
recently? And if I delete, shouldn't I make some deletions from the
"Catalogues" folder as well as from the "Files" folder?

was filling up when I hit 50 percent full, but it's too late for that.
Do I need to back up to another device until I can clear out my 250-GB drive
and start again, watching for the 50 percent limit this time? I feel like
someone who's having to think about buying another trash compactor because
he can't figure out how to empty the one he already owns.

Since there is no maintenance mode in Backup for OneCare, you have two choices - wipe the slate clean and start over or obtain another backup destination to start over before wiping the old backups away.
My recommendation would be to select those files that are most critical to you and back those up to DVDR by creating a new backup plan. Then, format the external drive, and create a new backup plan to start fresh.
There is no way to selectively delete parts of the existing backup or catalog.

FAQ: How to Delete Backups -steve

So is it safe to assume that Microsoft is working on fixing this? It would seem that a backup solution that is guranteed to fill up every users storage over time and does not provide a way for the user to maintain the size/lifetime of the backups is somewhat flawed.
Thanks,

I certainly hope so as it is a big oversight in the design, in my opinion.
