Windows 7 does not wake up to Backup

Question

Just upgraded to WIN 7 and apparently my WHS is not waking it up to backup. When I start the computer in the AM the backup starts. I'm guessing that this has been resolved before me but a search was unhelpful.Friday, July 10, 2009 1:58 PM

I'm running build 7100 (the RC) and it works if I put the PC to "sleep". It does not seem to recover from a hibernate, though. I don't know if this is hardware-related or something else.Friday, July 10, 2009 2:18 PM

Usually, when a computer will resume from sleep but not hibernation, it indicates a configuration issue on that computer. Did the computer successfully resume from hibernation when it was running XP or Vista? Or is this a new computer which had no previous OS?Also bear in mind that Windows 7 has not yet been released, and therefore Windows Home Server may not fully support everything about it. Since the Windows 7 release date isn't far in the future, I would expect that any final tweaks to Windows Home Server are in the works. :)

Hello Ken, Mine is a Dell laptop that I was so happy with XP that I only installed VISTA so that I could go to WIN 7. XP ran and backed up fine, I ran Vista for about 1 week and all was good. Just wanted to give it a few days for problems to pop up, then went to 7. After my post I looked around and did some configuring of my Power Settings.
I'm surprised that this has not been discussed more here. Maybe I got my Power Settings set to work better with WHS.Friday, July 10, 2009 4:04 PM -
So you think it's working now? What did you change?

Not sure if it will work yet. I will let it go tonight and see if it backs up. I went into Power Options and set Hibernate to never. And also set so that a password is not required from boot or sleep.Friday, July 10, 2009 6:58 PM

For sure the password doesn't matter. All of my machines that hibernate require a password for access after waking, and they back up just fine in that state. My Vista laptop hibernates, wakes, and backs up fine. I don't have Windows 7 on hardware at the moment, but I did for a while and didn't have any problems there either. So I'm thinking it's something about the hardware on that machine, in combination with how Windows 7 handles power saving features.

HI Ron,
Just for the record I'm running Win7RC x64 on two machines I have no problems with WHS and Win7 waking up for backups. I set my PC to hibernate and not to sleep. Other then that I haven't done anything that I know of to make it work.

Ken:
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate RC on my HP DV9700T CTO laptop and must say I'm impressed. Only bugs thus far is that Office Scan (trend micro business-grade anti-virus/firewall CRASHES Win 7 backup. Put on Trend Micro 2010 Internet Security beta trial and no problems with backup.
My questions are about sleep mode:
1- If the laptop is backing up and it's time to go to sleep, will it stay awake until the backup finishes?
2- Will the laptop awaken and run the backup if it's solely in sleep mode (not hibernation)
I did a fresh install of Win 7 on this laptop (not an upgrade)
thanks for any advice.
Oh, what about write-behind disk caching? I have it turned ON on the internal HD, but OFF on the external Western Digital My Book backup drive.
For some reason it won't let me 'safely disconnect' the Western Digital drive... it always says it's in use biy another program even if not doing a backup? What gives??
thanks again
