120-day Trial is actually a 30-Day Trial RRS feed

  • Question

  • I installed WHS back in April 2009 but it installed as a 30-Day trial not a 120-Day trial.  Is it possible to correct this.  I have files on this server, that I thought were backed up elsewhere, that I need to retrieve but I cannot logon to the server.

  • Per the page from which you downloaded:

    5. You may now use the Evaluation Edition for 30 days. To use the Evaluation Edition for the full 120-day period, you need to register at the Windows Home Server Connect site and acquire a product key for the Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition software.
Uninstall notice: The Windows Home Server Evaluation Edition expires 120 days after installation, if activated. Please refer to the product documentation before installing the fully licensed version of Windows Home Server.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Are you sure you activated the server? This needs to be done to get the full 120 days.

To get the files from the server you should normally be able to boot the server (no need to logon), then you should be able to access the shares from a netwok client.

If this doesn't work there's two things you can do:

    1. Server reinstall, if you don't enter the key you should get another 30 days. Server reinstall should normally preserve all data in shares and also the client backups. Data outside the WHS shares will be lost by this procedure. If you don't get the server REinstall option don't proceed.
    2. Mount the disks in another computer, on each of the data disks there will a hidden folder named DE (you need to enable "view hidden files and folders" on the system you use) which contains the files. On the primary disk the hidden folder named DE is present on the second (Data) partition.
