  • Question

  • I'm trying to back-up my Windows Vista to external hard drive (FAT32) but can not due to error message that local disk "J" is invalid, which is the external HD.  Can anyone help be out with this issue?

  • If the drive contains no data find the drive in Windows Explorer, right click the drive and select "Format". Select NTFS as the file system. When format is complete try One Care backup again. If there is data on the drive you can use the convert command to convert the drive from FAT32 to NTFS - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307881

  • Thank you, The drive has one thing on it but it is on my Windows Vista as well so if it is lost it can be replaced.  Why do I have to convert to NTFS?  Will it not work on FAT32?  I understand the need to format.

  • You don't generallt need to convert to NTFS unless you are using Centralized backup. However, NTFS is a more secure and efficient file system format, so it is recommended.
Actually, the fact that you are getting an error about the drive is invalid tells us that there might be a problem with the disk. Can you view the contents of the drive in Windows Explorer?
