  • Question

  • Hello Microsoft! My name is Aaron and I am a Windows 7 user, I am currently having an error saying, "Windows 7 is not genuine" I don't know what it means. My friend Jennifer said it means you have an illegal copy of it. I think that too cause my brother uses thepiratebay.sx Can you please tell me what "Windows 7 is not genuine" means and how I can fix it.

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • Either as you say it's not legit or it could also mean it's a legitimate copy but you haven't yet activated it. After a certain period of time Windows will start displaying that message until such time as you activate your copy of Windows, and let it check in with Microsoft to confirm it's a legit copy. If you don't activate it windows assumes it's not genuine even if it is.

  • Hi,

This is the state you enter after Windows Genuine Advantage determines that your computer is not genuine.

Did you active your windows through a genuine way? If not, then this is a normal phenomenon. Have you recently installed some software before this prompt? Counterfeit software is bundled with malicious and unwanted software that can lead to corrupted systems, lost data, and even identity theft.

You can also use the  slmgr.vbs command line to examine the licensing state of the Windows installation, along with a repair option for when there is a problem with the licensing components in Windows.

If you actived your windows through a genuine way, then try following:

Run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic tool (MGADiag) to find the cause.

This issue also occurs if the Software Licensing Service fails to start, you can use this command in an Administrator command prompt to reinstall license files:

    cscript slmgr.vbs –rilc

Watch for this result at the end of execution:

    License files re-installed successfully.

If still doesn’t work, perform a system restore, this can bring your system to an earlier point.
