Windows 7 not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,
I bought my computer about 2 years ago from Cyberpower with Vista and included an upgrade option for Windows 7. I used the upgrade, received the DVD from Microsoft and installed Windows 7 Home premium 64.
All was good until couple of weeks ago, when I saw on my desktop the message that my copy of Windows is not genuine. Also, I cannot use the Update option.
See below the results of MgDiag tool, please help!

Try Uninstalling the WAT Update (KB971033), and then reinstalling it.
I can't help feeling that there's an activation hack at work here somewhere - has the machine been sent in for repair at all, or has anyone else one any work on it?

(BTW - your Office installation is non-genuine!)

      SLIC NEC

The motherboard here appears to be an NEC one, rather than what I would have expected from Cyberpower - but I may be wrong.

Your actual problem seems to be that the machine is unable to access the VBS script that checks the licensing. This could be because of overzealous security software, or because the file is actually missing, or because Malware has affected the system.

Please check that the file C:\Windows\System32\slmgr.vbs exists -
If it does, then try the following...

    Recreate the Licensing Store
    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

Run MGADiag again, and post the report, together with details of any error messages encountered.

  • Hi Noel,

I found the file slmgr.vbs in that location.

After step 4 I got the message: the software protection is not started.

After step 7 I got the message

    "System error 3 has occurred.

The system cannot find the path specified."

After step 9 I got the message another window opened with the message:

    "Code: 0x8007003

Description: the system cannot find find the path specified.

I should mention that before receiving your message I tried different solutions mentioned in other inquiries.

Also, I forgot to mention that the "System Restore" is not working.

I tried to run MGADiag again, but I got the message: "Failed to create output files, hr = 0x80070002. Please contact support"

Try Uninstalling the WAT Update (KB971033), and then reinstalling it.
I can't help feeling that there's an activation hack at work here somewhere - has the machine been sent in for repair at all, or has anyone else one any work on it?

(BTW - your Office installation is non-genuine!)

  • It worked!

The machine was not sent to repair, and I am the only one working on it.

The message is gone, the update is working, I still have a problem with the restore system, but I asked help in another trend.

    Thank you.

  • Wow! _ I must admit that my advice was a bit of a leap in the dark (bust at least it couldn't do any damage).

    Your system looks fine now.

    Good Luck.

  • Thanks a lot for help.

    The only issue I still have is with "system Restore" not working;

When I try to use it I received the message:

"A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042302)"

If I go to Services and try to start the Volume Shadow Copy I get the message:

"Windows could not start the Volume Shadow Copy service on Local Computer. Error3: The system cannot find the path specified."

Would you be able to help, or should I go to another thread?

    Thank you

  • YOu're welcome

In respect of System Restore - I suspect I now what the problem is, but you'd best post a new thread in the Win 7 Answers forums, where experts can assist.
