Exactly what are you clicking on to update?  There are 2 different update sections on a HP MSS (1 part is from MS, the other part is from HP).  If you are sure you are updating the HP portion, you should contact them for support.

  • Jeff,

I think the XML file that MediaSmartUpdate tried to read is corrupted. To figure out which file, you need to configure and run filemon (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx). Delete the file and then see if the problem still occurs.

    Good luck.

I am doing the HP MSS part and I did contact HP but last time I had a software problem - they pointed the finger at Microsoft

LOL I love the way the error message is clearly their software, yet it's MS's fault.  Have you installed any add-ins or apps on your server?  If not, my suggestion would be to get more forceful with them.  It is their responsibility to provide you support.  Demand to speak to a level 2 tech and/or a supervisor.  (However, the most likely outcome from their support will be Server Recovery, so don't be surprised if it happens.)
