Sychronizing different paths RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm on a vista laptop and running an XP desktop in my basement. I'm attempting to synchronize the two's Documents folders. Seems like a common task, however since the OS's aren't the same, the paths aren't the same.

I want to have C:/Users/Andy/Documents on my vista machine (and my win 7 machine) synchronize with C:/Documents and Settings/Andy/My Documents.

No matter how I go about it, I do not see an option to make that happen. This seems like a "duh" feature. I disabled synchronizing to live desktop, because I have way too many files for that right now. I want the two folders to synchronize to each other.

  • I have found this now:

Issue : I moved a Live Mesh folder to a new location (or renamed a Live Mesh folder) and now it's no longer synchronizing .
Workaround : Go to the Live Mesh notifier and click Manage folders ; in the Explorer window that opens, right-click on the folder that you want to synchronize again and select Sync with this device... ; in the Synchronize folder dialog box you can click Browse and select the new location of the folder .

Can our problem be converted on this solution? I will try it.

    EDIT: it really works good.

  • I need to do exactly the same thing. In my case, one of the folders I need to sync is a folder with msn emoticons (one on Windows 7, other on Win XP).
In the case of soldstatic, the documents folder can really move to a equal location on both PC's, but msn emoticons don't.
How can live mesh do this? Like soldstatic said, "this seems like a "duh" feature", very basic.

You can do this by making the \Documents folder on one PC into a Live Mesh folder - adding it to the Mesh, then when it is offered to the other PCs, you click the light blue folder on the desktop and then browse to the location you wish to Sync to, select it, and accept the warning about conflicts. This will merge the folder on the connected devices. You can also change the Sync settings to not sync with the Live Desktop.
The default location for a new Mesh folder when offered to a PC is the desktop. Accepting this location does not allow the folders to merge. If you have already done this, you need to change the sync settings for the folder on the Live Desktop to not sync with the PC where the folder has ended up on the desktop. Once the folder on the desktop turns to a yellow Explorer folder (from a blue Mesh folder) you can delete the folder from the PC desktop and repeat the process of changing the sync settings on the Live Desktop to get that folder offered once again.
