WHS 2011 Backup VSS 8194 Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having this issue as well with a newly installed WHS 2011 server and my Windows 7 Enterprise machine.

    I only want to backup my C: to start with which is a 120GB SSD.

    I get the same error and only get:

    C:\Windows\system32>vssadmin list providers
    vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

    Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
       Provider type: System
       Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
       Version: 1.0.0.7

    My event log says:

    Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface.  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
    . This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

    Operation:
       Gathering Writer Data

    Context:
       Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
       Writer Name: System Writer
       Writer Instance ID: {4b76855f-fc55-477d-bd90-30882b4a96e5}

    And then it times out and repeats the same error until it fails.

    Also, here is a link to my error:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734235(v=ws.10).aspx

    It says to use the command: vssadmin list writers and determine which has the error. However that command reports NO errors. In that case the technet article says:

    "If the command reports that all writers are operating without errors, this means that the error condition is not writer-related. In this case, you should contact the backup software vendor that created the VSS requester application."

    :D

    That would be Microsoft I believe lol.

    Other programs of note on my computer which may be storage related:

    =Microsoft Security Essentials (no other antivirus ever installed)

    =SkyDrive App

    =Google Drive App  / Google Music Sync

    =Virtual Clone Drive

    Also, not sure if its relevant but I have 7 hard drives currently attached, two of them USB.

    I can go through detaching all my drives one by one and uninstalling all of those apps... before that, was wondering if anyone had any ideas. Again, I only want to backup C for now.

  • Could someone move this to the WHS 2011 forum. Seems I posted in the wrong place >.>

  • Actually could someone just hit me over the head with a hammer instead?

    It seems Windows Home Server 2011 does not support backing up GPT disks (which Windows by default partitioned my drive as when I installed) so I'm basically completely out of luck unless I want to reinstall Windows on my computer. And since my machine has UEFI, I don't even know if it would work.

    It wouldn't.

    I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • I know this thread is really old, but I'm hoping for a miracle, I guess, but posting anyway.  :)    Please!

    I am getting the same error when I try to back up a recently-acquired Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 7 when that was free) on a Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop.  I assume this error (based on above thread) because WHS 2011 does not support client backups from GPT drives. Holy crap, is that true?! GPT (GUID partition table) has been an available drive format for volumes larger than 2TB since Windows Vista/2008. Since Windows Home Server 2011 is really Server 2008 R2 under the covers, it "should" accept and understand GPT, right?!

    Here's Microsoft's article on volumes larger than 2TB and GPT support: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2581408/windows-support-for-hard-disks-that-are-larger-than-2-tb

  • Found this:   hotfix is available to add backup support for UEFI-based computers to back up to servers that are running Windows Home Server 2011

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2781272/a-hotfix-is-available-to-add-backup-support-for-uefi-based-computers-t

    I will install it and let you know if it solves the problem. (This is what I get for updating 6-year-old support threads).

  • After installing KB2781272 backups are completely broken. No backups from any client (with MBR or GPT volumes)! This was very frustrating until I ran into the following article:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/2934953/client-backup-fails-on-a-computer-that-is-connected-to-a-windows-based

    And used Windows Update to install.

    Now I must uninstall the WHS2011 Connector client, restart, and Re-install the Connector client on every machine I want to backup.

    Lots of reading and Google/Bing searching to find this trick! Yikes!
