XP Search problem

  I'm having a problem with my system restore and I need to search for a wininit.ini file but my search tool won't load.  When I'm in a folder and hit the search option the little dog shows up but the side is blank, and when i use the startup search for files or folders nothing happens.  Is there another way to search for a file and where would I find this wininit.ini file manually if possible, I've been searching but so far have been unsuccessful.  If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it!
