Backups started failing with error "An error occurred reading from server Storage" RRS feed

  • Question

  • The total error reads
"An error occurred readed or writing from server storage.
    D:\folders\{00008086-058D-4C89-AB57-A7F909A47AB4}\Data.4096.106.dat
    WriteFile
    1117"

This just started within the last week and occurs not matter which client is attempting to be backed up. All disks on the server are marked Healthy and there are no errors on the clients.

    Anybody got an idea?

    Thanks,
    Monty

  • Hello,
such errors often point to issues with the backup database. Its hard to trace the causes, can be a hardware error, unexpected power loss, crash etc.
Please login to your server locally or via remote desktop and check the event log for disk related error messages (such errors not always manifest themself in the console immediatly).
Also you may have to try the Repair backup database functionality, which has been added with Power Pack 1 to the Windows Home Server console.
If this also does not solve the issue, you could install the Windows Home Server Toolkit and with it installed select Reset database. This will create an empty database and you will loose all former client backups, but sometimes its the only way.
But before doing the last step, you should create a bug report on Connect as outlined in the sticky post on top if this forum.

  • Hi all,

i am unable to find 'server storage diagnostic' in whs toolkit. on the PC or WHS. i only have one option from my PC - 'connector troubleshooter' and nothing mentioning server storage diagnostic in WHS on the toolkit 1.1 tab in settings from the console.

also, i do not have a rest all button to press in backup tab under settings from the console.

quote from another post "Open the console from a client computer.  Click on Settings and select the Backups button.  Under the Backup Cleanup heading is a button that says "Delete All".  Click that and then Click the Cleanup Now button."

    thanks.

  • Hi James,
yes the thread is now a bit outdated, it did refer to the WHS Toolkit 1.0. In the meantime we have toolkit 1.1.
And you are right, some of the toolkit functions have been migrated to the base functionality of the console, so you find them now here, some have been removed.

  • Yeah, FIXED. Thanks Olaf. My Home Server has 6 drives and last month one of the drives went off line. I downed the server, re-seated all the drives and booted it back up and it ran fine. However, the backups kept failing with the message listed above. The tool kit 1.1 repair function did not fix it. So I deleted the backup database. Was I scared? Del *.*. Well, it did give me pause. Thats for sure. After restarting the backup service all computers still showed up on the computers & backup tab so I tried it. The backup worked. Now I have to backup all the machines. The server still knows all the computers exist, just with no backups yet so today will be backup day. Thanks again.
