WHS wakes computer, but does not backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Backups have been running for over a year with regularity - mostly on a daily basis except on those days when I shut down my laptop (as opposed to Stand By or Hibernate). Sometimes, though, my laptop will be awakened by WHS during the designated backup window, but the Backup is not executed.

Today (4/17) may be an exception because many Security updates were installed and a restart was initiatied.

The last Backup was 4/13. In the Event Viewer for source HomeServer, there are no log entries for 4/14 thru 4/16 even though the laptop was awakened each of those mornings. On 4/13 I can see event id 258 (Backup set started) followed by event id 260 (Backup started), then 261 (finished successfully) and 237 (Set finished). Those are the only entries for 4/13 with the next extry for 4/17.

So, why did no Backup events occur on successive days? I place the laptop in either Stand By or Hibernate state (tried both during those days). Those are the only two states the client can be in in order for it to be awakened and a backup performed.

Why would WHS awaken a client computer and NOT perform a Backup? Thanks for any guidance.

  • There are a couple of possibilities that come to mind. The computer may have awakened and, while waiting for a backup to start, downloaded patches automatically and rebooted. That may interfere with the backup process. Also, with a very shot backup window, the computer may not have had an opportunity to bak up if there are other computers also contending for that window. If a computer wakes to perform a backup but there's one already occurring for some other computer, it will be queued for a backup. If the backup window expires before the backup begins, it won't back up.

  • Hi,
was the laptop on battery on the days, during which no backup has been performed? If that is the case, backup will not be executed (the same, if a machine is connected to an UPS).
Could also be, that it fell in sleep again, before backup could be executed (this may happen dependend from the energy save settings and drivers on the machine).
    Which client OS is it?

  • Hi Olaf,
Thanks. No. The laptop was not on battery or UPS. It is constantly on AC power. Nothing has changed - especially from the 13th when the last backup was performed and the 14th, 15th and 16th when no backups were started. My backup window is set for 6am-7am (plenty of time for a backup to be performed). The 13th backup started at 6:07 and took 18 minutes, 3 seconds to complete. The reason I chose this window is so my laptop is started (awake) and the backup complete when I'm ready to begin my day at 7am. It is always in that state - all I have to do is login.

As mentioned in the original post, the client is running XP MCE SP3.
