Printing na post not working correctly

질문
-
In the Small Business server forum I posetd ""BPA Recommended Changes that Broke The SBS Web Site" and got a response this AM. Before leaving may office I opened the item and read the response and then printed it (at my site, Vista Business PC / HP Laserjet 4050 networked printer). I didnt read it at the time just grabbed the printout an headed to the client
At the client I found problem #1:
The scroll bar on the right side of the response clipped the right side of the response so I couldnt read it.
I reconnected and located the post and printed in landscape mode. Then I found problem #2:
Only the first 4 (of about 6) pages printed. Looking bnack at the first printout this was also only the 1st 4 pages only.
This was of course on a different printer - a canon network printer from the SBS 2003 server.
The last line printed from that post (landscape) was "I realize that your company web was working even if BPA detects it is not using .Net framework 1.1.4322" while it ent a little farther in portrait mode.

Hi,
We have this feature request in our backlog. However, no ETA on a fix. I'll defer this to one of our community program managers for more info.

As Don states, this is already in the backlog as an ask. But we do not have an ETA on making improvements to printing improvements. If this changes and we pull this into the schedule it will be communicated in the announcements forum as a feature we are delivering. Thanks for this email thread, it does give me more information to help us understand why this is important to users.

This is not a support forum for SBS questions.Use microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs (newsgroup)

Mike,
You must have skimmed my issue.
It is distinctly not an SBS question.
I simply included sufficient information for anyone to reproduce 2 problems with PRINTING a post!
To quote:
"#1: The scroll bar on the right side of the response clipped the right side of the response so I couldnt read it."
"#2: Only the first 4 (of about 6) pages printed."
The same problem occurs in the same manner in at least 2 completely different environments (Peer-peer Vista/HP Printer; SBS Server/Canon Printer) and probably every other environment.- 편집됨 TSoward 2009년 5월 28일 목요일 오후 5:32

Sorry bout that here it is:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/partnerwinserversbs/thread/af2eb588-def5-4048-b193-4d86e64708dd
If you open it up you will see a DOS window on screen part way down.
Do a print preview (Im using IE7) and you will see 4 pages and that it doesnt make it to that DOS window.
Page 3 is clipped by a scroll bar on the right.

Ted,
I see what you mean, the site isn't tuned well for printing, however I did notice If I print preview with IE8 I can shrink it by 50% to have it render the content of the post properly. At least it's a work around.

>You must have skimmed my issue.Skimmed indeed. Sorry.I'm so used to people posting SBS questions to "my" SharePoint forums that my response was rather too automatic.---------------------Could the forum people please explain why the SBS forum is a partner forum ?I have to move the SBS posts to Off-topic because it isn't a regular forum. There is - as far as I'm aware - an EBS 2008 forum, so why not an SBS one - why is it stuck in Partner land ?

This one bit me again today! (sorry Mike, its also in the SBS area).
Printed copies are important.
1. My clients have a lot of similarities -- most are SBS, all are small businesses, most are in one of a few types of business (lawyers, accountants, ...).
When a problem/solution pair turns out to solve a problem at one user it is common for that same problem to show up at another user. I keep a binder of things I might run into again.
2. When on site it is common to not have another working computer in close proximity to a faulting machine, esp a server. It is no fun to work through a complex set of steps by running back and forth across an office, or while standing at a rack trying to move between windows. Yes, I can copy the post, paste into Word so I can print it, but the formatting goes ugly and its a pain.
3. The worst is when (like today) I think I have the whole post and do not, call the end user (who was 1500 miles away) and go through the steps, get to the "end" thinking you've done everything and when I go back to the posting realize there was more and need to call back, get back to where I was and proceed with the missing steps ...etc etc.
It is really surprising that a bug in printing posts would be allowed to persist for any period of time. I may be dense but I dont get it.
Can it really be that hard to fix? -

Thanks, Don, for the feedback
I worked in software development for 20+ years. Every once in a while one of my programmers would describe a flaw in a piece of software as a feature, or the repair of the bug as an enhancement. The were seldom comforted by my position
No offence to you, but feel free to pass on that:
1. a car that quits part way to the destination;
2. a radio that only plays half a song;
3. an email program where only half the message makes it to the recipient; and,
4. a posting forum program that can print only half a post
have the same kind of problem: They don't work.
Asking for them to be fixed isn't a "request for a feature"
It is a BUG that needs to be fixed, plain and simple,
And, a very ugly blemish, that undermines an otherwise potentially fine product.
People don't judge things by their features, they judge them by their flaws. And the ratio is bad. At least 10 "Ata boy"s to make up for 1 "aw &*#$@#". How long would they use an email program if they couldn't count on the message going through entirely?
And, if you are told again that it is an enhancement request, do ask for a copy of the design spec, the part that specified "partial-printing".
Thanks

I’m not sure I would equate not having a page specifically designed and enhanced for optimal printing to ‘the application not working’. Whether we call this a bug or an enhancement request does not make much difference to me. The point is that users have asked for improvements or changes and we will take these recent asks and reasons for them into account when prioritizing the list of things we are being asked to do. Thanks for the input!

Ok, perhaps I overstated it. The core functionality is certainly working and is a nice improvement.
Nevertheless, printing is a fundamental part of the overall process that includes working on the problem computer or software that often is not within sight of a screen where the response can be followed, and this printing problem has caught me on multiple occasions.
Some posts print all but the latter part of each individual long response. When there are detailed steps you cannot print the post and head out the door to the client-- its a major pain.
This post itself is an interesting example, on my HP 4050, and HP 2500, page 1 prints normally followed by 4 pages without any content -- blank except header and footer. Everything past Mike's comment on May 28th is absent!
Workarounds that I've found aren't great:
1. select all on the post and paste without formatting into Word, which loses the formatting and double spaces everything -- but all the words are present; or,
2. paste into word in RTF format which turns the 5 page document into 21 pages but at least can be followed and has structure. A good compromise with 5 becomes 21 but not so good when 25 become 100.
3. screen snap each page and print them but that is time consuming and the print tends to be very small
4. Print it, then manually compare with the screen to find what's missing and find an alternative way to print whats missing.
I would agree with you -- if I could just print the post in a usable form. Not necessary to be pretty, or loaded with options. For that I can wait. I'd prefer not to have 4:1 page expansion. Accurate and complete I really need. I think most others do too. -
I just printed this post successfully!
In IE8:- on command bar I pulled down the list beside the printer icon and chose print preview.
- It showed whole post.
- In print preview dialog i chose print and IT PRINTED!!.
I thought i had checked this b4, and perhaps there has been a fix, but either way this is good.

After working successfully for some time now, the last few weeks printing again fails. It appears that respoinses are positioned to the left of the printable area. When you copy the post and paste to word you need to change the paragraph settings to left justify etc.

Turn your printer off completely and unplug it from your power source.
Be sure to save the document you are planning on printing, in the form you want it printed. When you clear your queue, all print jobs that haven’t saved will be erased—it will disappear as well.
Open Windows Services by searching “Services” in your search toolbar or clicking the Window button on your keyboard.
Halfway down your list of Services, you’ll see one called the “Print Spooler.” Right click on the Print Spooler option and look at your options. “STOP” will halt any stuck print you have bogging down your queue.
Once you’ve halted all print jobs using the spooler, use the Windows Explorer browser to search: C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS
Delete all existing files in your queue and shut down your computer unit from Windows.
Turn on your printer using the power button, then turn on your computer again.
Restart the print spooler service.
Print your document. If it works, you’re done!Regards,
Peter
