Restoring Backed Up Files after Live OneCare is Discontinued RRS feed

  • Pergunta

  • I backed up my data files using Live OneCare before it was discontinued in 2010.  I want to restore some of the files.  I downloaded and installed the Live OneCare restore utility from the Microsoft website, however the program will not activate because the website is not available.  How can I restore the data?

  • There should be no activation required for the Restore tool. I recommend using the OneCare cleanup tool and then reinstalling the restore tool.

If that fails to resolve it, you've got 2 choices.

    1. Use a manual method to find and extract the files you wish to restore. The backups made by OneCare are .zip files that can be opened with WinZip and other 3rd party compression tools. Any files that are too large for a single zip file were split by OneCare and will need to be renamed with extensions of .000, .001, .002, etc. and rejoined using a free utility available from here:  http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/ after extraction. Yes, this process can be tedious -- first to find the files you want to restore and second to rejoin files, if needed, but it works.

    2. Contact Microsoft Security Essentials support who should be able to direct you to someone who can assist.

  • The hard drive died in my computer so I have replaced the computer and want to restore files from a LiveCare Backup on a Newwork Drive. I am having problems restoring files with the OneCare File Restore Tool. I add the Newtowk Location when asked and press ok. The location shows and I press next. Then a message comes up that says "Windows Live OnceCare Restore Tool. Restore cannot continue. OneCare could not find a backup device or network folder containing a backup to restore. Please check to make sure that your back up location is available, and then try running again." I have used the OneCare cleanup tool mentioned in these forums and I have deleted a registry item mentioned in these forum. I really need to restore these files. Thanks for your help.
