N/AI had bought a copy of XP Pro which I assumed was good since it was sealed, looked like a real COA as shown on the Microsoft web site, holographic disc. Installed it on a rebuilt computer. All went well. I activated it, downloaded the updates, and went on my way. The other day, I checked to see if Windows Defender was on the system as I use that program on my other windows based systems. It was not, so I downloaded it from the Microsoft site, tried to install it, and found out that my XP Pro is not genuine. Kind of throws me, since it activated OK, and the updates work. Yet, the product key is apparently not assigned by Microsoft. Any help explaing this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello VeteranUSAF,
Would you send me the Product key at: <Removed>
In addition, would you also include a number you can be contacted at in case I need to have a Support Engineer contact you.
Note: the reason I have asked that you email a Hotmail account is because if I post my Microsoft email address, I will get a ton of spam and I don't want you to post your email for the same reason. With the Hotmail account I can delete it when too much spam starts coming in and just create a new one.
Thank you,

Hello VeteranUSAF,
My Key Information Tool show that key to be Valid and Genuine.
First, go to http://microsoft.com/genuine/diag and click the Start Diagnostic button. Once you get all green check marks, click the Validate Windows button.
-If your Windows validates as Genuine, then reboot and see if you still get the Non-genuine errors.
-If your Windows validates as Non-Genuine, report the full error message the web pages displays and post it here.
Thank you,

All green on the first test, but no good on the windows validation results page. Ran it several times as I had before. I am just so puzzled by the authentic looking sealed package, real looking COA, and the hologram disc. If Microsoft is so into this genuine copy thing of their software, why did it even activate and get updates if the product key is invalid. Guess I should resolve myself to either use the system as is, (as it works fine, and still gets the updates) or try to buy a new product key when I can. Again, Thanks so much for your help.Thursday, November 11, 2010 1:06 AM
