Is there a way to be able to visualize to which subscription belongs a license or an Office 365 user? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Good morning

Is there a way to be able to visualize to which  subscription belongs a license or an Office 365 user? From the website is not possible.

I need to know because a contract expired and a new one is being added. Because of this we aren't clear about the users who have previous contract licenses.

  • I would imagine that you would be able to find this in the office admin portal. Have you taken a look there?

  • Hi, if user has assigned for example Office 365 E3, which expires, and you bought new Office 365 (same SKU), you do not need reassign licenses in Microsoft 365 Admin Portal.

Only if you change SKU for example from Office 365 E3 to Microsoft 365 E3, you need to assign new licenses. You can make a assignment in license details or there is a wizard if you choose more users in portal. Do not forgot assign new one before delete old one.

  • Licensing plans define the Microsoft 365 services that are available to users. Your Microsoft 365 subscription may contain multiple licensing plans. An example licensing plan would be Microsoft 365 E3.

  • Hi,

Yes, you can view Microsoft 365 account license and service details with PowerShell. For this use the Azure Active Directory PowerShell.

First, you have to connect with your Microsoft 365 Tanent.

Then, install the required software and run as an administrator.

Now open an elevated Windows PowerShell Command Prompt window.

Run this command (Install-Module -Name AzureAD).

Answer Yes to all to continue the installation. Then in the sign in dialogue box type your Microsoft username and password and click ok.

Then you can use Azure Active Directory PowerShell for Graph Module by following the given link.

  • License details can only be viewed if you have the account under which the license is located. I can see all user accounts in my license dashboard.

  • You should be able to see it in the admin console for Microsoft. admin.microsoft.com should work?

  • From the O365 admin dashboard where you purchase and assign subscriptions you should be able to see what licences belong to whom. Along with this if you step into the user profile where you apply specific roles and resources you can see all subscriptions applied to a user.

Failing that, graph api can be used to see the subscriptions a user has:

    https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/users/[user]/licenseDetails

Unfortunately I don't have access within my company to access the licence agreements but I'm sure you should be able to find a query within Graph to list all subscriptions and all users that belong to each. Try starting with:

    https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/subscriptions
