  • Dear Customer,

Based on my research, there is no document specific to migrating SBS 2000 to Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007.

One way to do it is to join the Windows 2008 server as an additional DC

<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732737.aspx> into the SBS 2000 domain. Let AD replicate the AD data and then transfer the FSMO roles
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;255690> over and make the new server a global catalog.

For Exchange you could investigate two options:

    1. Export all the mail and public folders to pst’s from the SBS 2000 server and then uninstall Exchange to remove it from AD. Clean install Exchange 2007 SP 1 on the new server, recreate the mailboxes and import the data.

    2. Look for Exchange documentation on transitioning from Exchange 2000 to 2007

<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997617.aspx> to see if it’s possible to install 2007 into the 2000 Org and use the move mailbox wizard in Exchange to move the data.

Once everything is moved, you can remove Exchange 2000
<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288905.aspx> from the SBS 2000 server (if you haven’t already) and dcpromo down the SBS 2000 server to remove it from AD.

    I hope it helps.

Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks.

    Best regards,

  • I'm also researching a way to do the such task smoothly. But the first thing is you cannot add additional DC to SBS domain.

There is internal limitation of SBS server,  you are unable to add additional DC to SBS AD domain.

(When additional windows server doing dcpromo, error will pop up said version not allow additional DC on existing doimain. You also can't set trust relationship with other AD domains).

Some months ago I've migrate exchange 2003 on SBS to Standard Windows server 2003. I also export each user's mailbox to pst and import to new server. (There was about 20 users and 70GB total data, took me 3 weeks to complete the task to migrate all users)
