  • Dear customer:

Since http 500 errors is generic, in order to better troubleshoot the issue, please help collect the following information:

    1.     Did all users encounter the same issue?

    2.     What is the exact error the client is getting? Verify you obtain the error message returned when “Show friendly HTTP error messages” are turned off in Internet Explorer (they are on by default), and send the screenshot of the error to v-rocwan@microsoft.com for analyze.

    3.     What is the version of Exchange the client is connecting to?

    4.     Is the Information Store Service running and are mailbox stores mounted?

    5.     Is this a Front End/Back End (FE/BE) configuration? If so, is the BE Clustered?

    6.     If this is a FEBE configuration, determine if the issue occurs when logging on to OWA against the BE server.

    7.     What server is the client connecting to, A front-end or Back-end server? What is the URL of that connection? Does the client also see an HTTP 500 error when connecting only to the Default Web Site on the server itself (i.e., http://servername instead of http://servername/exchange or http://fully.qualified .domain.name instead of http://fully.qualified.domain.name/exchange?)

    8.     What version of Internet Explorer is installed on the Client machine? Does the same behavior happen using another web browser?

    9.     Is anti virus software installed and if so what product and version?

  • Hi Rock,

Thanks for your help and information, the following give more information for your reference.

    1.      Just some user have this issue, not all user

    2.      HTTP 500 like the following

    網站無法顯示該網頁            HTTP 500

    最有可能的原因

    l          網站維護中。

    l          該網站發生程式設計錯誤。

    3.      The FE exchange server version is 2003

    4.      The Information store service is running and the mailbox stores also mounted

    5.      Is the FE and BE configuration, and the BE is clustered

    6.      I have try to use RPC over HTTP is work fine. Just the problem when logging on OWA to BE server

    7.      The client connect to FE OWA page first, during the login process, it seem have some communicate problem  between FE and BE, just wait reply until timeout and the IE status bar just waiting at /exchweb/bin/auth/owaauth.dll, and the default website on server itself is (http://fully.qualified.domain.name)

    8.      The client machine is using IE7 and also try another browse e.g. firefox , but same result

    9.      The antivirus software is Symantec and the version is 9.0 and 10.1

And I'm trying the information you provided.

    Thanks,

    KH Choi

  • Hello KH Choi.

As you replied that not all users are experiencing the problem, only partial users. To help us solving your issue, please also try the following so that we can nail down to the root cause:

    - Can OWA be accessed directly without the FE, on client PC, FE as well as BE, please try access http://backend/exchange (ensure that it is not https:// since FE/BE does not support SSL on BE).

    - From your HTTP Error 500,

    HTTP 500 內部伺服器發生錯誤

    https://xxxxx/exchweb/bin/auth/owaauth.dll

What is the xxxxx/exchweb? The xxxxx represents FE or BE?

    - Within your Internet Explorer's Internet Options, within Advanced, un-check Show friendly HTTP error messages. Re-generate the HTTP Error 500 and see if it gives your more detail information.

    Looking forward for your reply.

    thx,

  • Dear Rock,

I found that the work around solution, but need to grant access right in firewall policy. (TCP 88 & UDP 88)

Then the user can access webmail via OWA.

The related error in the event log at MailFE Server as the following:

A Kerberos Error Message was received:
             on logon session username@domain.com.hk
     Client Time:
     Server Time: 12:0:8.0000 7/15/2008 Z
