Transfer FSMO role to other server on Exchange 2003 RRS feed

  • 問題

  • Hello.

Due to heavy work load of an exchange 2003 server (W03 Enterprise, Exchange 2003 Enterprise)

The windows 2003 also domain controller (5 FSMO roles) and GC.(This is the only  dc in domain)

In the AD domain, there is another windows 2k server.

I'd like to dcrpomo the 2k server as an other dc.

Can I transfer 5 FSMO role and the GC role to the 2k server  (All add DNS on this server)

Will it cuz some problem with on exchange 2003 server?

  • Hi Bill,

First, as you know, we don’t recommend install Exchange on domain controller.

If you install Exchange Server 2003 on a domain controller, do not use the Dcpromo tool to demote the server to a member server. Changing the role of a server after you install Exchange Server 2003 may result in loss of some Exchange functionality and is not supported.

See the following KB for more detail.

As your goal is to separate the Exchange from the domain controller, it is still possible without demoting. It requires a spare machine. You can install this machine as a member server in the domain, install Exchange with the same version to it, and move all the Exchange resources to this new server. After that, you can remove Exchange from the original server.

  • du to other technical problem. I'm giving up to add a domain controller on same AD domain.

We will wait for the buget to add a 08 server with exchange 2007 later.

*Note:I've switched some users to use cached mode. their outlook performace become faster now.
