  •  Dear Customer,

From your post, my understanding of this issue is: Users cannot browse other computers in My Network Places.  If this is not correct, please feel free to let me know.

Based on my research, this issue may be caused by various factors, we may need to perform several steps to narrow down the root cause of this issue.  I would suggest we perform the following steps to see whether the issue can be resolved:

    1. This issue can be caused by virus.  Therefore, please scan the systems several times to ensure it is clean.

    2. Verify the NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all workstations.

    a. Open Control Panel, open Network Connections, right-click on the connection which is connected to the LAN, and then click Properties.

    b. Point to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties button.

    c. Click Advanced button, click WINS tab, click to choose "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP".

    3. Verify the following services are started and the startup type is Automatic:

    TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

    Workstation

    4. Reset the whole system security permissions:

    a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

    b. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

    "secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose" (without quotation marks)

You receive a "Task is completed" message, and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message.

NOTE: After security settings are applied, you cannot undo the changes without restoring from a backup.  If you are uncertain about resetting your security settings back to the default security settings, you must make a complete backup that includes the "System State" (the registry files).  Items that are reset include NTFS file system files and folders, the registry, policies, services, privilege rights, and group membership.

For detailed information, please refer to the following KB article:

If the issue still exists after performing the above steps, please help me to collect some information so that I can perform further research:

    1. Browser status:

Note: Browstat.exe is a tool in the Windows XP Support Tools.  You can download it from the following link:

    <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=49AE8576-9BB9-4126-9761-BA8011FABF38&displaylang=en>

    a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

    b. Type "browstat status" (without quotation marks), and then press Enter.

    c. Please let me know the output of this command.

Hope the above information helps.  Please take your time in trying my suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Have a nice day!
