  • VB.NET is not suitable for building an operating system, as it cannot interact with hardware directly.

    You can, however, build the graphical "shell" (file manager, etc.) using a managed language like VB.NET if your operating system supports the .NET Framework ;-).

  • What your showing are shells - not operating systems :)  It is perfectly feasible to create your own shell that sits on top of windows.  Look around, there are lots of alternative shells for windows....  In fact, what you see in windows is explorer.exe, it's in fact, not a true part of the os...

    There are projects to write an actual OS using .NET languages (mainly C#), but they do that by creating native code compilers - you need that to talk to the hardware.
